I wonder why the Flip Camcorder hasn’t hit the Philippines yet. It’s already had several incarnations so far (the Flip Mino HD and the 2nd Gen Flip Mino HD), but the basic model still has to be purchased Stateside. Wonder if the big names of handheld digital camcorders are keeping the Flip out of the Philippines on purpose?

In any case, there’s a new Flip gadget to watch out for next year. According to its manufacturer Pure Digital, the Flip will have WiFi connectivity for instant video upload. To keep costs low, the Flip won’t be having touchscreen technology, but it will have a larger sliding screen that has the record and menu buttons hidden underneath. Too bad they didn’t think of releasing the new Flip before the year ends; this would have made a very popular holiday present.

There are a number of rival companies who’d like to ride on the success of the Flip Mino HD. But with the release of the second generation Flip Mino HD, it looks like competing models have a lot to make up for. The new Flip mino has 8GB or 120 minutes of recording capabilities, has a fresh brushed metal look, a 2-inch anti-glare color display, and an HDMI port. At $299 it costs $30 more than the previous version, but these upgrades seem well worth the money. Available now at Amazon.Com.

The new Kodak Zi8 HD camcorder is totally not competing against the Flip Mino HD. In no way do they look the same in terms of design and usability, especially with the, easy one-button approach to taking videos. Like the Flip Mino HD, the Hi8 HD has 1080p recording, YouTube uploading support, and an SD card slot. However, it also has face tracking, image stabilization (don’t you just hate those shaky amateur videos?), a 2.5-inch LCD display, and Facebook uploading support. I think Kodak is the only competitor the Flip’s makers should be worried about because the Zi8′s features are so similar, and they’re only selling for $180 a pop (the Mino costs $299). Watch out for the Kodak Zi8 in September, in blue, black, and red.
