Globe unveiled the most aggressive telecommunication network modernization and expansion project in the Philippines. Expect a spike in bandwidth.

Globe CEO Ernest Cu says expect boosted signal ..blazing fast mobile Internet access, pervasive 3G coverage , double fiber optics , 4G and LTE readiness.

Globe takes service quality to a new level of performance with the rollout of its biggest network modernization program utilizing modern technologies, providing subscribers with a more stable and reliable service experience.

With this initiative, say goodbye to prompts like “Message sending failed” or “Unable to establish call connection”. The Globe mobile network will be re-planned and re-tooled with intelligent capabilities to ensure that Filipinos are connected all the time through their mobile phone.

Service quality means a wider 3G footprint covering the entire Philippine archipelago, with boosted signals that are consistent, stable and no dropped calls – an experience replicated wherever you are in the country. More than this, future technologies like HSPA+ and LTE can be fired up anytime with growing demand.

This aggressive project stemmed from the huge demand of mobile data. Text messaging has gone down from previous years because people have shifted to Facebook.

This new program will entail massive re-planning of the entire Globe network to make sure the Filipino consumers can experience the service quality they want from a communication company. With a modernized network, Globe customers can expect significant improvement through reduced incidence of dropped calls, on time delivery of text messages and easier call connections at peak hours and traffic-heavy occasions.

Gobe says, network quality will be boosted by 50 % more fiber optics which will provide a significant increase in capacity plus enhanced 23/3G indoor and outdoor coverage that will be deployed in the farthest towns and municipalities.

During extreme weather conditions, Globe subscribers can also anticipate a consistent quality of experience in the midst of extreme weather disturbances.

It will cost Globe $US 700 million to support the project over the next five years, with a project rollout period of two to three years.

Well this might be the end of complaints of Globe consumers once this program is completed. This project is indeed good news to Globe subscribers like me. Globe says it is like having your own network in your hands.

Watch this video to know more about this new project:

(will update this once I get more details of the expansion project)

This week, PLDT just introduced a solution to our third world internet woes. Called PLDT Fibr, this service is the first Internet connection in the Philippines that uses fiber optic cables to bring fast internet speeds of up to 100mbps. Just to put things into perspective – with a 100 mbps connection, it will only take a minute to download a full-length movie.

Yesterday I got to experience the 100 mbps speed when I did a live streaming of the ground-breaking social media coverage of US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton at the Philippine Museum. There is nothing like a fast internet speed to ensure a smooth livestreaming video.

After the event, I got to talk to the PLDT media because I was curious to learn more of the 100 mbps service. I was informed that the PLDT Fibr is now available to residents in Forbes Park and Urdaneta Village in Makati, Palms Pointe in Alabang, Wack Wack Village in Mandaluyong, and all Valle Varde Villages in Pasig. Soon, it will be available in other areas. The PLDT Fibr plan comes with an Optical Network Unit (ONU) modem that connects to a fiber optic cable. With a connection like this, you can enjoy crystal-clear high-definition content on your HDTV as well as hassle-free simultaneous high-speed browsing.

You can enjoy the insanely fast speed of PLDT Fibr with monthly plans of P3,500 for the 8mbps plan, P6,500 for the 15mbps plan, and P20,000 for the 100mbps plan.

Maybe the 100 mbps is something I cannot afford but the 8mbps seems reasonable.

More and more mothers and even young ones can work at home and it needs a stable and fast internet connection.

This also holds true for other families who live in digital homes that need a fast, reliable, wired Internet connection for simultaneous use on multiple gadgets. Here comes PLDT myDSL who came up with a plan to help you get the strongest DSL connection at home, with speeds as high as 10MBPS at only P4,000 a month. Of course, there are plans convenient for any budget as well, starting at the affordable monthly rate of P990.

PLDT myDSL says they have more reliable connections thanks to the continuous upgrades of its lines, most notably the ongoing switch from traditional copper lines to the PLDT Next Generation Network, which is being done without additional costs on the part of subscribers.

Going hand-in-hand with these improvements is an upgrade on PLDT myDSL’s customer services and a regularly updated website for news, product announcements, and promotions.

All myDSL subscriptions are part of PLDT’s Triple Play package, which includes unlimited myDSL, a landline, and PLDT online entertainment portal Watchpad, which gives you access to 17 channels and exclusive content, as well as the coming Pacquiao Vs. Marquez fight, live with no commercial breaks if you’re on plan 1995 and up and registered to Watchpad. Not yet on Watchpad, register now. And if you’re a non 1995 and up subscriber, you can still watch the fight for free if you subscribe to Watchpad Big Ticket from now until Nov. 10.

I love challenges. When SMART postpaid invited me and some bloggers to the launch of SMART’s new All-net offerings through an “Amazing All-Net Race”, I agreed right there and then. What an amazing (no pun intended) way to get introduced to these latest offerings through a series of exciting games and challenges.

Amazing All-Net race

Of course, I knew our team will win. Positive thinking right there at the start with my buddy Jane then later joined by Ryan de Leon and Marlon Magtira.

We were dubbed the yellow team. During the “Amazing All-Net Race”, we made calls and sent text messages to friends from other networks, did mobile internet and even made an IDD call to a Hongkong number to get a password. Huffing and puffing as we ran through all the stations, each stop introduced us to the features of the Smart Postpaid All-in Plan. There were challenges in one stop. For the life of me, I could not identify the breed of this large dog. We were told to identify the breed and download the flag of its origin from our Galaxy Y phone. Ryan being creative asked a passerby if he knew the dog’s breed. It was a bull mastiff. Another fun stop was buying clothes to wear in a store with a budget of 1200 pesos or less. At Graffiti Tee, we found a shirt that cost 250 each. We had to wear them of coure.

I was lucky that the phone we used was Samsung Galaxy Y, which I just reviewed a few days ago. Through all these whacky activities, we got introduced to the essential services that can now be accessed more efficiently and affordably through a Smart Postpaid subscription.

We also got to check a sample of a postpaid bill and compared the rates charged by other networks with SMART Postpaid’s All-net offerings. Jane did the computation. That was where our team had an edge because Jane is an accountant. This exercise showed us that when it came to crunching the numbers, the Smart Postpaid’s lower rates amounted to bigger savings on one’s postpaid bill.

After all that number crunching and running exercise, our yellow team won! We were all smiles and sweat as we received our trophy – an HTC Wildfire S. This will certainly become my SMART phone now.

You can read more from Jane’s article for the Amazing Race details in her entry : Smart Launches its All-Net postpaid plans with an amazing race

Smart Postpaid All-net services

I am still deciding what kind of plan suits me. I already have the postpaid data plan so I don’t need to add that to my All-net services. I am thinking of the call and text to other networks.

Smart’s Postpaid All-net services as part of the All-in portfolio will be able to give the lowest postpaid call and text charges to all networks. For example, Smart Postpaid All-net Talk lets subscribers cut their postpaid call charges in half with 80 minutes of calls to all networks of only 250 pesos for 30 days — bringing down the voice call rate to only PHP 3.12 per minute while other providers charge as much as PHP 7.50 per minute.

That’s certainly savings.

Smart Postpaid All-Net text costs only PHP 350 fr 30 days for 2,500 text messages to all networks, which is equivalent to only 0.14 per SMS instead of the standard rate of PHP 1.00 per text charged by other networks.

Data services under the Smart Postpaid All-in plans also give the widest range of data volume on demand , from 25 MB to 2 GB. With the IDD bundle saver, you can make international calls at local rates , plus 5 minutes free for only 200 pesos.

My plan (Create your own plan here) is to get an All-in Plan of 800 pesos then customize my plan to unlimited talk or sms. If you are not aware yet, the Smart All-In Plans are fully consumable plans that allow you to charge services to your monthly service fee.

Now my husband wants to get a postpaid All-in plan himself just to get a free phone and unlimited calls to his parents who use SMART.

Check the FAQ of SMART’s All-net services.

I can say that Smart Broadband, Inc. (Smart Bro) is indeed my most reliable provider and they are fast too. With an HSPA + site in my barangay, I get fast HSPA + speeds (see list of HSPA + sites). Now the good news is Smart Bro is making available the fastest mobile broadband device in the Philippines.

Named the Smart Bro Rocket WiFi Plus, the portable pocket router is capable of reaching speeds of up to 20Mbps using Smart’s 4G HSPA+ (Evolved High Speed Packet Access) network. Using the ZTE MF60, I have experienced these speeds though I have yet to experience 20 Mbps.

“If you thought the 12Mbps Rocket Plug-It was already ahead of its time, the Rocket WiFi Plus will blast you off even farther into the future,” said Smart Broadband Internet and Data Services Head Gio Bacareza. “The Rocket WiFi Plus can reach a ‘conservative’ 20Mbps on our 42Mbps network,” he added

Up to 5 gadgets may connect simultaneously on the Smart Bro Rocket WiFi Plus.

Pre-order now

From October 1, Smart is putting the Rocket WiFi Plus up for pre-order at www.smart.com.ph/bro. Units sell for P6,495 each and come with a free 180MB preload.

The Rocket WiFi is available exclusively in prepaid and uses the same P200/180 MB pricing scheme as that of the Rocket Plug It.
Subscribers can top via accredited Eload stations or through the use of Smart Bro Prepaid Cards. Smart Money account holders may also reload using their mobile phone.

Boasting newly-upgraded elements such as wireless base stations, fiber optic cables, and international gateways, PLDT and Smart’s infrastructure is being transformed to be able to meet the demands of the Internet- and data-driven market of the future.
“We are rolling out our HSPA+ network like a rocket. Last August, we launched the SMART Bro Rocket Plug-It with only 150 sites. Now we have over 600 HSPA+ sites and counting,” said Bacareza. “We have the best devices, working on the best network, which enables us to bring the best service to even more Filipinos,” Bacareza ended.

I can’t tell you enough how useful a portable modem is when one is travelling outside the country. Data roaming is quite expensive and buying a prepaid SIM is a good option which I did when I vacationed in Australia for three weeks. I have a Huawei e585 portable modem which served me well the past months.

A month ago, @longbeard asked me if I was interested to buy the ZTE MF60 USB Modem . I thought it was not necessary since I can always buy the Samsung S2 to take advantage of HSPA + networks of Globe and Smart.

The state of our telecom industry is such that internet connection is never stable or fast enough. I believe in redundancy of internet connection due to my online work in editing articles, engaging with social media users and writing in my blogs. That is one reason I have most of the telecoms: SUN Broadband, Globe broadband , Globe 3G, and Smart 3G. I recently cut the Smart Bro connection because it was only giving me a speed of 256 Kbps. To think I am paying 999 pesos a month for a dialup speed.

Getting the ZTE MF60 USB Modem seemed a logical choice so I can share my internet connection with family and even blogger friends. I also need it for live streaming. So I bought the ZTE MF60 USB Modem from @longbeard (his website here) just last Monday and got it today.

This nifty pocket wifi works like my Huawei e585 except that this model supports the new HSPA+ network from both Globe and Smart which means that the portable WIFI modem can reach the 10Mbps or 12Mbps downlink speeds of the telco.

I decided to test it with a SMART SIM from one of my household staff since mine is being used by my brother. I also thought that based on the list of HSPA + sites in Manila, my location will be covered.. When I turned it on, the signal was only 3G. Shucks. I don’t know if SMART is just bluffing about their HSPA + capability or it is down right now. I will have to review this again next week.

Using the ZTE MF60 was easy. I just turned it on and waited to get connected. There is a temporary password found in the inner back cover of the modem. I then logged on to the web interface to change the default username and passwords.

The default language is Chinese but that was easily changed to English. I just followed the instructions in the brochure that came with the box. Voila. I was busy testing the speed.

Using speedtest.net, I discovered that the speed is highest in SMART servers and slow in Globe servers. I don’t think speedtest.net a reliable gauge to test the speed or is it just not relying on the telecom as the web server? Yugatech tested it in both Globe and Smart SIM but I am not sure what web server he used to check the speed.

Looking at my dashboard, the signal says it is HSPA + but on the LED screen, it says 3G. It feels that I have a fast internet connection.

Take a look at my results all taken within 30 minutes.

Here are speed results from SMART servers :

It says the speed is 6.84 mbps from SMART Pasig which is my place of residence. I expect the speed to be more considering that I am located in an HSPA + site kuno.

Results from SMART Lucena shows even higher speed at 7.43 mbps download speed.

From Smart Las Pinas, the speed drops down to 4.91 mbps.

I checked it with other servers and found from a Bayantel server that the speed result is 0.76 mbps.

Philcom from Panabo city shows a speed result of 3.39 mbps.

Skybroadband server says speed is 0.36 mbps.

Lastly, the lowest of all speed results is from Globe is 0.24 mbps

The maximum capability of the ZTE MF60 to reach the 10-12 mbps speeds cannot be tested yet since I can only get 3G signal . This is the first day I am using the ZTE MF60. I will have to check with a Globe SIM and review the SMART speed result with another SIM card so stay tuned for my follow-up review.

I bought the ZTE MF60 for 7,000 pesos from @longbeard

I am planning to buy a ZTE MF60 USB Modem , a portable WIFI modem that actually supports HSPA+ network but first I want to see which telco has strong HSPA + signal in our location in Pasig. This nifty pocket wifi works like my 3 MIFI except that this model supports the new HSPA+ network from both Globe and Smart which means that the portable WIFI modem can reach the 10Mbps or 12Mbps downlink speeds of the telco.

So which telco SIM should I get?

Based on the list provided by Yugatech , the winner is SMART. I am so excited to get my new pocket WIFI. A separate review will follow after using it.

When Tonino Lamborghini’s CEO issued a press statement that the Tonino Lamborghini stick is a fake, I couldn’t believe it. I wanted to hear the side of Globe. It was June when I first heard of Globe’s new product during their launch. It is sad to hear news like this.

Right after I posted it in Twitter, someone tweeted me that the Tonino Lamborghini stick is not authorized. I just shrugged it off.

Globe issued a clarification shortly after.

Globe Telecom obtained authorization to use the name and logo Tonino Lamborghini through an agreement with Primo Mobile, the master franchisor of mobile phone related products for the Italian brand Tonino Lamborghini. Primo Mobile is a Singapore-based company that has a master license agreement with Tonino Lamborghini s.r.l. and is duly authorized to sub-license the use of the Lamborghini logo. The design of the Globe Tattoo Tonino Lamborghini 4G USB sticks was reviewed and approved by Primo Mobile.

Globe Telecom assures the public of its strong adherence and commitment to the highest ethical standards in business and good corporate governance. The company will not engage in any activity that will mislead the public in the course of doing business and serving its customers.

My lawyer friend thinks “brouhaha might be result of failure to conduct due diligence of licensee and verify master franchise.” Another lawyer in Twitter says “I hope the Singapore company is allowed to sub-license” and that there was no misrepresentation on their part.

I believe the CEO of Tonino Lamborghini should be informed of this authorization and issue another statement. Accusing a product of being a fake is not something to be taken lightly.

I love high tech stuff. I call them my gadgets, as toys. Playing with toys is way I relax and just chill. Attending the Smart first “Jump” experience center is definitely a fun-filled experience. It makes you want to be little kid and just try out. The “Jump” Experience Center showcase PLDT Group’s latest devices, services, and technologies.

A high tech experience

I am quite impressed with the layout. In events, I don’t usually walk around each and every booth. The “Jump” is definitely an experience. Each nook was well-thought off. The home connection reminds me of my digitally enhanced living space except that I don’t have that Telepad.

“At Jump, you will find the newest, coolest gadgets and services that we have to offer to serve the digital and mobile lifestyles of our customers at home, work, and leisure,” said PLDT President and CEO Napoleon L. Nazareno. “It showcases how PLDT and Smart are working together to offer customers the best possible service.”

There is so many things to see at the Jump. All the latest products for the high tech home is imaginable here. One can peruse through the new PLDT Telpad, the latest smartphones and tablets — the Apple iPad 2, the BlackBerry PlayBook, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and the HTC Sensation.

The handsets and devices that have yet to come out in the market and that will work best when powered by Smart’s nationwide network are featured here. Take a spin with the HTC EVO 3D, Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray, Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and the NFC-enabled Nokia C7.

PPLDT’s Fiber to the Home and Smart’s WiMAX and HSPA+ connectivity will power these mobile handsets. Just like the gadgets, visitors are free to try out these services even with their own devices. I believe that is the only way to get sold to the service if testing is available. I wish they’d also offer “trial period” before deciding on a subscription.

Digital playground

This has got to be the best part of the “Jump Experience”.

The three gigantic touchscreen displays is awesome. The first is the ‘Jump Screen’ located by the entrance allow visitors to create their own dancing avatars. (Check the first photo of this entry. )The second is used in the ‘Jump Springboard’ lecture room as an interactive way of learning for customers. The third and largest is called ‘Jump Panorama’ and is found at the heart of Jump.

At 82 inches, Jump Panorama is one of the largest multi-touchscreen displays in the Philippines. It is an interactive screen featuring various products and services of PLDT and Smart and how they play a role in the lifestyle of each member of the typical Filipino family.

Imagine playing with Angry Birds in this huge screen.

When the Jump Panorama is not playing this interactive video, Jump visitors can get a ‘supersized’ feel of the latest touchscreen devices, from phones to tablets.

Another innovation at the Jump Experience center are two units of multi-touch screens capable of accommodating 32 fingers — equivalent to 4 people simultaneously using it.

Jump visitors can also play games with their friends and know more about PLDT and Smart activities in the interactive presentation of the ‘Jump World’.

Most of all, the staff is more than willing to help you explore the “Jump” experience.

Here is a panoramic view
