The Samsung Galaxy Y has got to be the most affordable Android smartphone in the market. Maybe not, but is Samsung’s most affordable phone in the market. It runs on an Android 2.3 Gingerbread with a 3-inch QVGA display and powered by an 832 MHz processor. The phone is only 104mm long and weighs 98g. This light weight phone has a 2 megapixel rear camera but you need a memory card to be able to use it. The metallic finish is pretty and exudes more class than HTC’s Wildfire S, Galaxy Y’s closest competitor.

The beauty of this affordable Android phone is the Samsung apps that can do just about everything. The Android 2.3 comes with a very web browser, email client and media player, support for social networking and other applications. The 832MHz processor really isn’t that much but if the usage is sending SMS and tweeting once in a while, not much power is needed.

The downside is that the Android phone is small and the low resolutioh. My husband has the Corby and I can compare the difference. The Galaxy Y has better features than the Corby . A year ago, the Corby was just as affordable. There was much improvement since then. Video capture at 320 x 240 pixels and running 15 frames per second is of poor quality and not worth sharing over social networks. All these limitations are necessary since it cuts down on some higher-end specs and thus deliver a lower price.

The main attraction is the affordability especially to mothers who don’t want to spend a leg and an arm for their teens. That is why it is called Samsung Galaxy Y. Y for the young.

With an SRP of 5,990 pesos , it is surely an attraction for those that can’t afford the higher end Android phones. Smart offers Samsung Galaxy Y for as low as P4,990 through Smart Rewards or through a Prepaid Kit: P5,990 with P1000 load

Available in the Philippines on October 15.

Check the video for a sample of how the Galaxy Y works:

The ASUS Eee Pad Transformer is like having your cake and eating it, too – the innovative device is a tablet computer that can turn into a more traditional laptop feel, thanks to its expandable keyboard dock. As a tablet, the Eee Pad Transformer is an impressive machine in itself, with an NVIDIA® Tegra™ 2 dual-core processor running the smooth Android 3.0 Honeycomb as its OS. The hardware is enough to make the machine a TV-on-the-go, thanks to a crystal-clear scratch-resistant display, 3D stereo, and even HD video output support.

What makes the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer stand out, however, is its ability to switch from play mode to work mode in a matter of seconds. One common issue with tablets is that they’re not exactly conducive to working; the layout of traditional laptops is just better when you’re trying to get something done. By attaching the Eee Pad Transformer to its keyboard dock, the device morphs from a tablet orientation into a notebook that’s ready for mobile office work.

The flexibility with this machine is exceptional, and definitely makes the device something to keep an eye on. If you want a mobile computer ideal for both work and play, head on over to a nearby ASUS and try out the Eee Pad Transformer. Prices start from P22,995.

If tablets really aren’t your thing, and you’re looking for something that combines both style and functionality, look no further than ASUS’ K series notebooks. Underneath the shiny aluminum shells are technological powerhouses that offer maximum versatility for excellent prices. The ASUS K series boasts Intel® second generation Core™ processors and NVIDIA® GeForce™graphics, making the notebooks fully capable of playing the latest games without any hitches. The laptops are designed with both multimedia and workability in mind, allowing you to get tons of mileage out of these devices. All this is made possible with ASUS’ IceCool technology, which reduces the machine’s heat by a significant amount, making it more comfortable to use and less prone to overheating. Prices start at P29,995.

Could bite-sized tablets be the biggest thing to hit the market? Personally I don’t see the point of owning a tablet that’s too small to display anything well, but it seems to be a new trend. Take for instance the ViewSonic ViewPad 7x, which is less than a pound heavy and only 7-inches long, and among the first tiny Android Honeycomb tablets to hit the market (the others being the HTC Flyer and the Acer Iconia Tab A100). Despite its diminutive size, the ViewPad 7x packs a couple of good specs. It has the same 1 GHz nVidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor other regular tablet haves, a 1024 x 600 resolution 10-point multi-touch display, HDMI output, front and back cameras, and a HSPA+ modem. I’d still rather get a regular-sized tablet though, but anyone looking for a portable Android tablet might want to consider this one. Check out the video to see the ViewSonic ViewPad 7x in action.

First gen Samsung Galaxy Tabs are on sale today, and that can only mean one thing: they’re about to become obsolete. Samsung just announced the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and a Galaxy Tab 10.1, two sleek and slimb Honeycomb slates that will include their new TouchWiz 4.0 software. The unveiled models aren’t the final yet, but according to Samsung, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 will weigh only 1.03 pounds while the 10.1 will be just 1.31 pounds heavy. Both will have WiFi versions, and have 3.5mm headphone jacks, SIM slots, microSD slots, 3-megapixel camera with LED flash at the back and a 2-megapixel camera in front. Both Tabs will also be equipped with 1GHz dual-core processors. The Galaxy Tab 8.9 will have 16GB of storage, while the 10.1 will have 16GB and 32GB varieties. With a 6000mAH and 6860mAH battery respectively, both devices will have around 10 hours of playback time. As for Samsung’s TouchWiz software, it’s designed to complement the Honeycomb experience. With TouchWiz, users can resize widgets, launch apps quickly, and provide other useful features.

Rumors are rife about new features the iPad 2 might have. Last week, MacRumors.com said that we can expect the iPad 2 to be out by April and equipped with goodies like a near-Retinal display. Since it’s impossible for the iPad to have the same true Retina Display as the iPhone 4 without a major processor upgrade, Apple is giving it the next best thing. The new iPad will also have dual cameras and what looks like a microSD slot (see photo). The device also marks Apple’s move from chipset maker Infineon to Qualcomm; you can expect the iPad 2 to have a dual GSM / CDMA chipset manufactured by the latter.

If there is one thing I am used to in Manila is having data access to wireless SMART 3g or Globe 3G. The only places I could get free Wifi are coffee shops like Starbucks or Peet’s Coffee and Tea. Starbucks wifi has no password. It is such a delight to work there. In fact I met up with a San Franciso policeman for a short interview on trafficking and cyber crimes.

Participating in the Giants Parade last November 2 was history and I wanted to capture the photos and share it live. Well, I didn’t have an internet connection in the streets. See my photo blog of the Giants’ Victory Parade. That’s when I needed an internet connection. Before I came to San Francisco, I checked the AT&T website to see if they had a data plan. I also asked my sisters but they did not know either.

My Portable Modem Wifi 3G Router needed a prepaid SIM for me to go online.

I spotted this AT&T store while shopping at Stonestown Galleria, San Francisco and was curious about their plans. I asked the salesman if they had a prepaid data plan. He told me that he will check first. After waiting for 10 minutes, I was surprised to hear the good news.

$15.00 with Usage Limit 100 MB and 1 day expiration.

$30.00 with Usage Limit 300 MB and 7 day expiration

$50.00 with Usage Limit 1 GB and 30 days expiration.

Next time you need a prepaid data connection in the USA, just drop by any AT&T branches. The guy said the prepaid SIM can be ready in 10 minutes.

Today, Apple finally confirmed the existence of the rumored iPhone 4G. It will be available in the US on June 24 with the new iOS 4 operating system and four new features.

First is the 3.5-inch Retina display, which has 960 x 640 pixels to make text and images look absolutely crisp. The iPhone 4′s Retina display is powered by a technology called in-plane switching (IPS) – the same technology used in the iPad – so that users can achieve a wider viewing angle. This means that you can hold the iPhone any way you want and still see a clear picture.

There’s also FaceTime video conferencing, a Skype-like service that doesn’t require you to set up a new account. It’s as easy as making a regular video call – all you have to do is find your Contact and tap on the FaceTime button. You can also do so when you’re already on a voice call and would like to switch to video.

Multitasking will now be made easy thanks to the multitasking user interface, which allows you to switch back and forth between recently used apps without slowing down the performance of your current app or draining the battery. Just double-tap on the Home button to reveal the recently used apps, then tap on the icon to open it.

Finally, there’s HD video recording, allowing you to capture moments in stunning high-definition. The iPhone 4 is equiped with an advanced backside illumination sensor, which delivers crisp video in low-light and bright environments. If it’s really too dark, there’s a built-in LED light to brighten things up. You can also perform basic video editing at the Camera app.

The iPhone 4 will come in either black or white, and will be sold in the US for $199/16GB model and $299/32GB model. iPhone 4 will roll out worldwide to 88 countries by the end of September. iPhone 4 will be available by the end of July in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and
