Globe unveiled the most aggressive telecommunication network modernization and expansion project in the Philippines. Expect a spike in bandwidth.

Globe CEO Ernest Cu says expect boosted signal ..blazing fast mobile Internet access, pervasive 3G coverage , double fiber optics , 4G and LTE readiness.

Globe takes service quality to a new level of performance with the rollout of its biggest network modernization program utilizing modern technologies, providing subscribers with a more stable and reliable service experience.

With this initiative, say goodbye to prompts like “Message sending failed” or “Unable to establish call connection”. The Globe mobile network will be re-planned and re-tooled with intelligent capabilities to ensure that Filipinos are connected all the time through their mobile phone.

Service quality means a wider 3G footprint covering the entire Philippine archipelago, with boosted signals that are consistent, stable and no dropped calls – an experience replicated wherever you are in the country. More than this, future technologies like HSPA+ and LTE can be fired up anytime with growing demand.

This aggressive project stemmed from the huge demand of mobile data. Text messaging has gone down from previous years because people have shifted to Facebook.

This new program will entail massive re-planning of the entire Globe network to make sure the Filipino consumers can experience the service quality they want from a communication company. With a modernized network, Globe customers can expect significant improvement through reduced incidence of dropped calls, on time delivery of text messages and easier call connections at peak hours and traffic-heavy occasions.

Gobe says, network quality will be boosted by 50 % more fiber optics which will provide a significant increase in capacity plus enhanced 23/3G indoor and outdoor coverage that will be deployed in the farthest towns and municipalities.

During extreme weather conditions, Globe subscribers can also anticipate a consistent quality of experience in the midst of extreme weather disturbances.

It will cost Globe $US 700 million to support the project over the next five years, with a project rollout period of two to three years.

Well this might be the end of complaints of Globe consumers once this program is completed. This project is indeed good news to Globe subscribers like me. Globe says it is like having your own network in your hands.

Watch this video to know more about this new project:

(will update this once I get more details of the expansion project)

I love challenges. When SMART postpaid invited me and some bloggers to the launch of SMART’s new All-net offerings through an “Amazing All-Net Race”, I agreed right there and then. What an amazing (no pun intended) way to get introduced to these latest offerings through a series of exciting games and challenges.

Amazing All-Net race

Of course, I knew our team will win. Positive thinking right there at the start with my buddy Jane then later joined by Ryan de Leon and Marlon Magtira.

We were dubbed the yellow team. During the “Amazing All-Net Race”, we made calls and sent text messages to friends from other networks, did mobile internet and even made an IDD call to a Hongkong number to get a password. Huffing and puffing as we ran through all the stations, each stop introduced us to the features of the Smart Postpaid All-in Plan. There were challenges in one stop. For the life of me, I could not identify the breed of this large dog. We were told to identify the breed and download the flag of its origin from our Galaxy Y phone. Ryan being creative asked a passerby if he knew the dog’s breed. It was a bull mastiff. Another fun stop was buying clothes to wear in a store with a budget of 1200 pesos or less. At Graffiti Tee, we found a shirt that cost 250 each. We had to wear them of coure.

I was lucky that the phone we used was Samsung Galaxy Y, which I just reviewed a few days ago. Through all these whacky activities, we got introduced to the essential services that can now be accessed more efficiently and affordably through a Smart Postpaid subscription.

We also got to check a sample of a postpaid bill and compared the rates charged by other networks with SMART Postpaid’s All-net offerings. Jane did the computation. That was where our team had an edge because Jane is an accountant. This exercise showed us that when it came to crunching the numbers, the Smart Postpaid’s lower rates amounted to bigger savings on one’s postpaid bill.

After all that number crunching and running exercise, our yellow team won! We were all smiles and sweat as we received our trophy – an HTC Wildfire S. This will certainly become my SMART phone now.

You can read more from Jane’s article for the Amazing Race details in her entry : Smart Launches its All-Net postpaid plans with an amazing race

Smart Postpaid All-net services

I am still deciding what kind of plan suits me. I already have the postpaid data plan so I don’t need to add that to my All-net services. I am thinking of the call and text to other networks.

Smart’s Postpaid All-net services as part of the All-in portfolio will be able to give the lowest postpaid call and text charges to all networks. For example, Smart Postpaid All-net Talk lets subscribers cut their postpaid call charges in half with 80 minutes of calls to all networks of only 250 pesos for 30 days — bringing down the voice call rate to only PHP 3.12 per minute while other providers charge as much as PHP 7.50 per minute.

That’s certainly savings.

Smart Postpaid All-Net text costs only PHP 350 fr 30 days for 2,500 text messages to all networks, which is equivalent to only 0.14 per SMS instead of the standard rate of PHP 1.00 per text charged by other networks.

Data services under the Smart Postpaid All-in plans also give the widest range of data volume on demand , from 25 MB to 2 GB. With the IDD bundle saver, you can make international calls at local rates , plus 5 minutes free for only 200 pesos.

My plan (Create your own plan here) is to get an All-in Plan of 800 pesos then customize my plan to unlimited talk or sms. If you are not aware yet, the Smart All-In Plans are fully consumable plans that allow you to charge services to your monthly service fee.

Now my husband wants to get a postpaid All-in plan himself just to get a free phone and unlimited calls to his parents who use SMART.

Check the FAQ of SMART’s All-net services.

I am planning to buy a ZTE MF60 USB Modem , a portable WIFI modem that actually supports HSPA+ network but first I want to see which telco has strong HSPA + signal in our location in Pasig. This nifty pocket wifi works like my 3 MIFI except that this model supports the new HSPA+ network from both Globe and Smart which means that the portable WIFI modem can reach the 10Mbps or 12Mbps downlink speeds of the telco.

So which telco SIM should I get?

Based on the list provided by Yugatech , the winner is SMART. I am so excited to get my new pocket WIFI. A separate review will follow after using it.

When Tonino Lamborghini’s CEO issued a press statement that the Tonino Lamborghini stick is a fake, I couldn’t believe it. I wanted to hear the side of Globe. It was June when I first heard of Globe’s new product during their launch. It is sad to hear news like this.

Right after I posted it in Twitter, someone tweeted me that the Tonino Lamborghini stick is not authorized. I just shrugged it off.

Globe issued a clarification shortly after.

Globe Telecom obtained authorization to use the name and logo Tonino Lamborghini through an agreement with Primo Mobile, the master franchisor of mobile phone related products for the Italian brand Tonino Lamborghini. Primo Mobile is a Singapore-based company that has a master license agreement with Tonino Lamborghini s.r.l. and is duly authorized to sub-license the use of the Lamborghini logo. The design of the Globe Tattoo Tonino Lamborghini 4G USB sticks was reviewed and approved by Primo Mobile.

Globe Telecom assures the public of its strong adherence and commitment to the highest ethical standards in business and good corporate governance. The company will not engage in any activity that will mislead the public in the course of doing business and serving its customers.

My lawyer friend thinks “brouhaha might be result of failure to conduct due diligence of licensee and verify master franchise.” Another lawyer in Twitter says “I hope the Singapore company is allowed to sub-license” and that there was no misrepresentation on their part.

I believe the CEO of Tonino Lamborghini should be informed of this authorization and issue another statement. Accusing a product of being a fake is not something to be taken lightly.

After pioneering 2G and 3G technologies in the Philippines
Globe showcases speed and reliability of 4G mobile technology

It was just too bad, I missed the demonstration of the 4G technology. I was busy filing a criminal suit. Good thing Globe got back to me with news regarding the speedtest demo.

Globe Telecom conducted a live speed test demonstration of its 4G mobile technology, using the global standard HSPA+ or Evolved High-Speed Packet Access at its initial rollout phase. This followed after the technology is already available in 19 sites in Metro Manila, covering Marikina, Quezon City, Makati, Pasay, Las Pinas, Taguig and the City of Manila.

During the live demo, a Globe 4G HSPA+-powered broadband dongle was speed tested simultaneously with four other dongles – a regular Globe Tattoo stick (2G), a Globe SuperStick (3G) and its two competitor brands. In the speed test, the broadband stick running on 4G HSPA+ bested its competitors after registering a download speed of 8.55Mbps and an upload speed of 1.02Mbps. Its 2G and 3G-powered sticks also showed better and improved performance in download and upload speeds after being used in a 4G-powered site, surpassing existing speeds. This showed speed and reliability of 4G HSPA+ amidst simultaneous broadband sticks being tested which required more network bandwidth to work.

Globe Portfolio Management Head Joanna Africa also showcased the various functionalities of Samsung Galaxy S2, the latest 4G-capable device that Globe will exclusively offer to its subscribers in the next few weeks to allow them to fully enjoy the 4G experience on their handsets. With this device, subscribers are treated to better and more stable data connections that will result to high-speed web browsing and faster video streaming and downloads.

Now considered as a mainstream technology, HSPA+ is the most relevant 4G technology available in the market today. Current subscribers using 3G-enabled mobile phones and broadband dongles are already benefiting from the initial rollout with improved call, text and data experience. Subscribers based in the pilot HSPA+ areas can expect to experience the real 4G technology with new 4G-enabled devices and applications coming very soon only from Globe.

I am a happy and satisfied PLDT MyDSL subscriber since April 2007 and it is the fastest, the most consistent, and the most reliable internet connection in the house. The PLDT Mydsl wired connection is connected to my main work computer, the desktop located at my my small-office-home-office (SOHO) on the second floor.

The thing is, does the SOHO need to be limited to one area of the house? I like to move around my cozy home because I am first and foremost, a mom and a homemaker. This is where the PLDT MyDSL modem+wifi will come really handy. Think of the possibilities if we had a reliable internet connection delivered via WIFI in every corner of our house.

Working here at my antique narra writing table is best at around 7:00 AM after my dear husband leaves for office . Hearing the chirping Maya birds and gazing at the greenery of the pocket garden is a good start for the day. This nook works best for me when I am in a calm mood.

The dining room is the favorite part of our home. It’s the soul of the house, a place of conversation. When the kids or my husband are having a snack, I am sometimes found lounging on the couch. If work piles up, I can multitask with my macbook while supervising the food preparation, cooking or house cleaning. I am at my most productive when I work in the dining room area.

And of course, the sanctuary of my home is the bedroom which I share with my husband. At night , my husband and I read websites or blog hop before we call it a night. You can see his laptop on his side table.

The flexibility of my SOHO allows me to move around as I work and relax as well . Sitting down in one area stiffles my creativity. I like to work and enjoy the view at the same time. It would be ideal to have a redundant WIFI connection.

Now, you know why PLDT myDSL modem + wifi in One is something I need.

This is my official entry to the Nuffnang – PLDT MyDSL modem+wifi contest. Even if I don’t win the contest, I still plan to upgrade.

Several months ago, I blogged about the launch of Globe Duo, Globe’s new breakthrough service that lets you make landline and mobile phone calls all through one SIM card! The Duo SIM card enables you to make unlimited calls to landlines, unlimited calls to any DUO subscriber, receive landline calls wherever you are, and make the usual mobile calls or texts.

I find it really so useful. Since I was one of the first to avail of the service, my Duo Globe Number is pretty and so easy to memorize. My household or family members can call me anytime especially for emergency matters. If you haven’t availed of the Duo Globe, you should get one now.

How does it work?

Globe Duo is surprisingly easy to use. Other phones can accommodate two SIM cards, but Duo is the real two in one. No need to keep a second phone around or get a duo SIM phone, because DUO SIM cards contain both the landline number and the mobile number.

Once you are subscribed to Duo, you will be given your Duo Landline number. Now, your mobile phone and SIM will have two (2) numbers: your current mobile number (i.e. 0917-XXX-XXXX) and your Duo Landline number (i.e. 02-XXX-XXXX).

Upon activation, the following calls are rendered free of charge: DUO to any Landline calls, any Landline to DUO calls, and DUO to DUO calls. Calls made to other mobile numbers are charged regular mobile rates.

No need to enter a prefix or keyword to make landline calls! To call a landline number, simply dial the area code plus the landline number. To call another DUO number just dial the area code and the DUO number of the person you are calling. For any landline to call you a person will just dial the area code and your DUO landline number

How much does it cost?

Post-paid and prepaid subscribers can enjoy the Globe Duo service through affordable plans. Postpaid subscribers pay additional P399 every month of the service, while prepaid subscribers can get Duo for P450 for 30 days, P125 for 5 days or P25 per day of meter-free calling.

I am so happy with the service that I was willing to give a video testimonial of the Globe Duo service.

Here is my video testimonial.

Good news to TV lovers in the Philippines.

A new TV viewing standard has gone High Definition. High-definition television or HDTV is now available to households all over the Philippines via Mediascape’s Cignal.

“This marks a significant milestone for the Philippine television industry. Cignal with its Cignal HD and Cignal Digital TV is the most aggressive initiative thus far to bring digital television to more Filipinos all over the country,” said Manuel V. Pangilinan, Chairman, Mediascape. “We are once more at the cutting edge of innovation, offering the next generation of advanced services to our people.”

High definition viewing is fast gaining popularity in countries like the U.S with more than 100 HD channels available and in Europe, around 77 HD channels. In Asia, Japan started the trend and is now being followed by Korea, Hong Kong & Singapore. The Philippines is now catching-up with its neighbors.

“Filipinos are known to be early adopters of technology when services are made easily available and affordable, such as cellular communications and Internet connectivity. Cignal does the same for HDTV – it offers reliable and affordable HD viewing to Filipinos in every corner of the country,” said Orlando B. Vea, President of MediaScape, Inc. “It will also be more accessible to subscribers because they can avail of both Cignal HD and Cignal Digital TV’s competitive packages in all Smart Wireless Centers nationwide.”

The digital difference
I was quite impressed with the quality of the TV experience even at standard definition that I nearly availed of the discount tonight but I knew I just had to ask permission from my husband. The thing is the favorite channels of my husband are not currently available. NO ANC Channel too! Maybe right now, there are limited channels but he just doesn’t want to give up his cable TV, just yet.

Cignal comes in two packages – Cignal HD and Cignal Digital TV – each boasting of a unique TV viewing experience. Currently, Cignal Digital TV provides 20 SD/standard definition top rating channels including GMA 7, ABS CBN 2, TV5, QTV, Studio 23, NBN, CS9, IBC13, ETC, @nd Avenue, Net 25, HBO, Disney Channel, PBO, and Viva Cinema. It also carries digital radio broadcasts of DZRH Television, 90.7 Love Radio, FM 101.1 Yes FM, Joey 92.3, Magic 89.9, 99.5RT, and NU107. More channels will be added into the roster of entertainment selections in the future.

Cignal HD offers two exciting channels through its High Definition platform – Voom, a general entertainment channel that broadcasts a wide variety of programming from sports, fashion, concerts, and documentaries; and the History Channel which will show a variety of interesting topics that cover genres of world history – military, contemporary, historical, technology, and natural as well as science, archaeology, and pop culture.
With more and more people using the Internet, there’s usually more than one person in the household that needs to stay connected. And with netbooks and notebooks becoming more affordable these days, it’s very likely that more than one person in your household will want the mobility promised by these ultra-compact devices while they use the Internet.

Asus now offers consumers an easy way to set up an internet connection, printer sharing, and Prioritized Bandwidth Usage without the hassle of wires. The Asus WL 520gU is one of Asus’s flagship routers, and what makes it popular among consumers is the Quick Internet Setup (QIS) makes setting up the network a total breeze. The QIS automates the whole set-up procedure by detecting the type of internet connection your network devices have, eliminating the need for guesswork or reference to complicated manuals. It also comes with an easy to follow set-up guide which will take you through the whole set-up process in just two simple steps.

Other features of Asus WL 520gU router include the Network Map, which gives you a complete overview of the network device map at a glance. The EZ MFP allows network devices to share printing and scanning devices wirelessly with multiple users, eliminating the need for a server, the hassle of disconnecting and reconnecting in most print servers when multiple users access the printer. And with Bandwidth-on-Demand, you can assign more or less bandwidth according to the users’ individual needs.

If you purchase an Asus WL-520gU now, you’ll be receiving a USB WiFi dongle, a plug-and-play device that lets you connect to the internet without wires or complicated set-ups. All you have to do is plug your dongle into your desktop, netbook, or laptop, and you’ll automatically receive a signal from your router!

The Wireless promo runs from March 9 to April 10, 2009. For more information about the promo orother Asus products, visit ph.asus.com.
